Success Stories: 5 Real Client Recoveries in Barcelona

Most “success stories” pages are written by someone who has never met a client. Invented names, stock photos, round numbers. You have probably read a few this week.

These five are real. Every quote below was written by the person themselves and published on my Google profile, where anyone can read it in full — including the ones I would not have chosen.

I’m Felipe Barba, a licensed physiotherapist and certified personal trainer based in Sarrià, Barcelona. I’ve worked at Teknon Medical Center and rehabilitated athletes from the Chilean Olympic Committee and the Chilean national handball team. What follows is what that combination actually looks like from the client’s side.

Javier — a frozen shoulder that was heading for surgery

Javier came to me after months of a frozen shoulder that had taken over his daily life. He was in constant pain and had been told surgery was his only remaining option. We worked together for six months.

“Before starting therapy with him, I was in constant pain and even considering surgery as my only option. Today, I’m doing chin-ups, lifting weights again, and most importantly—believing in a full recovery without surgery.”

Javier

The part I want to draw attention to is not the chin-ups. It is the sentence about believing in a full recovery. A frozen shoulder takes a long time, and the hardest part of the job is keeping someone loading the joint through the months where progress is invisible. That is a training problem as much as a clinical one — which is exactly where most rehab hands you a discharge letter and stops.

Cristina — scoliosis and lumbar osteoarthritis, trained entirely online from the United States

Cristina trained with me in person years ago in Chile. She has back pain from scoliosis and lumbar osteoarthritis, so her programme has always had to balance getting stronger against not flaring anything up. Then she moved to the United States with her family, worked with several other trainers, and eventually came back to me — remotely.

“For a few years, I worked under the care of other trainers; unfortunately, I didn’t feel they could help me achieve my goals. Then I learned that Felipe, despite living in Spain, was offering online consulting services. I didn’t hesitate and contacted him. I’ve been working with him for almost 7 months now, and I’ve noticed many positive changes.”

Cristina

Cristina is the reason I stopped treating online coaching as a lesser version of the real thing. She has a spine that needs watching, she trains on another continent, and she does not like sessions longer than an hour. That is a demanding brief, and it is met by structure and attention rather than by being in the same room.

If you want the detail on how that works, it is on the Longevity Coaching page.

Celeste — had never done a single push-up in her life

Celeste arrived having accepted something a lot of people quietly accept: that upper body strength was simply not available to her. Not “I’ve lost it” — she had never done one, ever.

“I could not do a single push up my whole life, and I accepted having no upper body strength. After a few months of training, I was doing push ups and lifting more weights than I could have imagined! Not only do I feel strong and proud, my whole upper body looks amazing. Even with this success, he has kept a steady and achievable approach that has become a lifestyle change.”

Celeste

Her last line is the one that matters to me — “steady and achievable”. The push-up is a nice milestone, but the reason it stuck is that nothing about the process required heroics. If a programme only works while motivation is high, it is not a programme.

Kalindi — a broken wrist and a torn meniscus at the same time

Kalindi came with a wrist that had not fully healed and a meniscus tear. Her orthopaedist had recommended private physiotherapy sessions specifically to build strength and avoid an operation. Two injuries at opposite ends of the body, both limiting, and a clock running.

“The orthopedist recommended me to take private fysio sessions, strengthening my muscles in order to prevent a surgery. Felipe was very professional and able to moderate every exercise in a way that I could perform them (even with a broken wrist and meniscus tear). Would recommend him to anyone wanting to get fitter in general, or when you are injured and needing someone to show you that yes you can continue exercising.”

Kalindi

Almost every exercise has a version you can do injured. Finding it takes knowing what the tissue can tolerate — not lowering the weight and hoping.

Neri — training with L2 and L3 back injuries

Neri has lumbar injuries at L2 and L3. He and his wife train together first thing on Monday mornings.

“I have back injuries (L2, L3) and it’s super important to have a trainer that can also make sure you do what’s right for you. My wife and I go together first thing every Monday morning. Best way to start our week.”

Neri

“A trainer that can also make sure you do what’s right for you” is, in one sentence, the whole reason I kept both qualifications.

What these five have in common

None of them came to me to get in shape. They came because something in their body had stopped cooperating and the usual options had run out — physiotherapy that ended before they were back to normal life, or a gym that had no idea what to do with a diagnosis.

That gap is where I work. A physiotherapist knows why the tissue hurts. A personal trainer knows how to load it over months. Very few people hold both, and the handover between the two is where most recoveries stall.

  • Two of the five were actively trying to avoid surgery. Neither has had one.
  • Two were training with a live diagnosis, not a healed one.
  • One trained entirely online, from another continent, with a spinal condition.
  • All five are still training.

Shoulders come up more than anything else in my reviews — frozen shoulders, broken shoulders, post-injury shoulders. That is not an accident of who found me; it is the joint where the gap between “discharged from physio” and “safe to train” is widest.

If something here sounds like your situation — a joint that never came back properly, a diagnosis nobody will train around, a recovery that stalled — the first conversation is free and I will tell you honestly whether I can help.
